COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Woodworking Vocational Skills

Practical hands-on skills training to provide a solid foundation of technical skills preparing students for work in a wide variety of jobs in the wood products manufacturing industry. Our graduates are working in every aspect of the industry including architectural millwork, furniture making, musical instrument making, and exhibit and display production. During the course, students complete a range of projects in our modern, well-equipped shop.

Woodworking Computational Skills

The shop math component includes arithmetic, pre-algebra, geometry, sheet yield, board measure, and problem-solving appropriate for the woodworking industry.

Woodworking Career Development

Contextualized employment skills preparation for entry-level positions in Woodworking. Includes lecture and practical group and individual exercises and discussion about on-the-job leadership, problem solving, teamwork, conflict resolution, time management, paying attention to detail, priority and goal setting, completing job applications, resume writing, interview techniques, mock interviews, and how to succeed on the job.

Woodworking Reading, Literacy, and Communication Skills

Contextualized communication skills includes: basic English grammar, reading and writing skills, woodworking terminology, business writing, professional email communication, strong listening, and clear verbal communication.

Woodworking Blueprint Reading

The print reading component includes interpretation and analysis of shop drawings used in the woodworking industry in order to evaluate spatial relations, grasp concepts of 3D visualization, and identify component parts and assemblies of designed objects.

COURSE OF INSTRUCTION:

Woodworking training is operated at our 55,000 square foot facility located at 500 N. Sacramento Blvd, Chicago, IL 60612. The woodshop includes an advanced machining center with a CNC Router, Edgebander and sliding table saw. Infrastructure includes an 11,000 square foot shop, a classroom, technical materials library, and computer stations. Equipment used in the hands-on training includes: table saws, jointer, planer, band saw, pin router, drill press, sanders, veneer press, portable power tools, and hand tools. GWTP is accredited by ACCSC and is a Woodwork Career Alliance-accredited evaluation center.
